3 Body Problem. (L to R) Jess Hong as Jin Cheng, John Bradley as Jack Rooney in episode 103 of 3 Body Problem.

If you haven’t read Cixin Liu’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy (which is comprised of the titles The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End), you might have been watching past trailers for Netflix’s upcoming adaptation and wondered, to put it simply, what the fuck is going on.

The final trailer for 3 Body Problem, however, finally conveys the impetus behind the events in the books and, presumably, the series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and True Blood alum Alexander Woo. In it, we hear Benedict Wong explain that scientists heard a message from space way back in 1977—a “Wow!” event, as he calls it. Aliens are calling, and contact with them will change humanity forever! And probably not for the best!

The trailer also hints that those futuristic virtual reality headsets might have something to do with the extraterrestrial communique. Here’s the synopsis, which further explains the inciting premise of the show:

A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day. As the laws of nature unravel before their eyes five former colleagues reunite to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.

We can see how that threat unfolds (or gets more confusing) when all eight episodes of 3 Body Problem premiere on Netflix on March 21, 2024.
